    Good morning President Binder and members of the commission. My name is Beatriz Jackson, and I am a board member of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO). I represent RNAO's Region eight, an area that includes Durham Northumberland and the nuclear reactors at Pickering and Darlington. I have lived in Pickering for 22 years now, just 10 kilometers from the nuclear plant. With me today are Susan Munro, representing RNAO's Ontario Nurses for the Environment Interest Group, and Kim Jarvi, RNAO's Senior Economist.

OCNIG is an interest group of RNAO comprised of registered nurses working in the federal and provincial correctional systems as well as nursing students interested in correctional nursing.     My name is Kerrie Pickering, president of RNAO’s Ontario Nurses for the Environment Interest Group. On behalf of RNAO, I urge the Ontario government adhere to the precautionary principle and develop a strong emergency preparedness plan regarding nuclear risks on the Great Lakes.

    RNAO is very concerned about the health risks and costs of nuclear power, and we urge that as long as Ontario continues to run nuclear plants, it must act in accordance with best practices and develop a comprehensive nuclear emergency plan to reduce the risks to the public.

    My name is Lisa Levin. I am the director of the nursing and health policy department at the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO). With me today is Cheryl LaRonde-Ogilvie, a registered nurse and nursing policy analyst with RNAO. As the professional association representing registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing students in Ontario, we thank you for the opportunity to provide advice regarding Bill 87. RNAO will respond to Schedules 3 (Ontario Drug Benefit Act) and 4 (Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991). Today we will be commenting on five key recommendations based on our submission.
