Exploiting pandemic-related surgical backlogs, the government wants to channel public funds and surgeries to for-profit clinics and expand, through legislation, the range of services and procedures they can provide. The result: investors win – Ontarians lose.
Join us! Call on the premier to stop for-profit surgeries in Ontario!
For-profit health care compromises quality, costs more, expands a two-tier system, erodes service in our public hospitals and worsens wait times. For-profit care suctions off nurses, other health professionals and funding out from the public system, leaving it with deteriorated services. We are already facing a crisis in our hospitals – this will make it worse!
The burden of COVID-19 on an understaffed health-care system in Ontario generated a backlog of surgeries and procedures. The solutions to clearing the backlog lie within a strengthened public health-care system, not in for-profit care. Operating rooms must run 24/7. Retention and recruitment programs that respect nurses and other health-care workers and provide competitive compensation must be implemented immediately. Specialized not-for-profit centres dealing with high-volume simple procedures such as cataract surgeries can be established in stand-alone not-for-profit clinics. But, hip and knee replacements are never that simple and must be performed within our hospital system.
Join us! Call on the government to strengthen our public system, not dismantle it.
