Action Alert: Fund Build Canada Homes to ensure housing is affordable for all, Prime Minister!
In September, Prime Minister Carney announced the creation of Build Canada Homes (BCH), a federal agency intended to drive long-term affordable housing solutions for Canada.
BCH has the potential to finally act in a meaningful way on Canada’s commitment to housing as a human right and make a real impact on our present housing crisis. It will only do so, however, if Prime Minister Carney fulfills the promise of BCH to build non-market housing at scale.
Join us! Urge Prime Minister Carney to sufficiently fund BCH to make housing affordable for all Canadians.
According to the Canadian Housing Survey, one in eight Canadians report experiencing some form of homelessness over their lifetime. Some population groups - Indigenous and 2SLGBTQI+, for example - experience much higher rates of homelessness.
A report from the Federal Housing Advocate estimates that there currently exists a shortfall of 3 million homes affordable to very low- and low-income households and 1.4 million homes affordable to moderate- and median-income households. Those numbers are expected to grow in the coming years.
The National Housing Council (NHC), created under the National Housing Strategy Act, has advised the federal housing minister in four successive reports that building non-market housing is both necessary and good for the economy. In their latest report, the NHC concludes that doubling the share of non-market housing units from its current level to the average of other high-income countries by 2030 would boost productivity by 5.7 to 9.3 per cent and add between $67B to $136B to Canada’s GDP. Multiple studies confirm the direct, indirect and induced economic benefits of constructing non-market housing.
Join us! Call on Prime Minister Carney to sufficiently fund BCH to make housing affordable for all Canadians.
