Improving quality of life using prescribed cannabis in the long-term care setting

Mackenzie Health LTC explored medical cannabis as a new option for residents whose pain, symptoms, or responsive behaviours weren’t improving with traditional treatments.

After staff participated in RNAO’s cannabis education series, the home introduced carefully prescribed cannabis products—helping reduce antipsychotic use, improve pain control, enhance sleep and appetite, and support end-of-life comfort.

With multiple resident success stories and a formal policy now in place, medical cannabis has become a meaningful tool in improving quality of life for many residents.

Mackenzie Health LTC is a 168-bed not-for-profit home in Richmond Hill, Ontario. It is part of the Mackenzie Health campus and is managed by Universal Care, Inc.
