Recap: National #NPWeek2022 and NP Knowledge Exchange Symposium
RNAO’s ninth-annual NP Knowledge Exchange Symposium kicked off to a powerful start in celebration of National NP Week 2022 (Nov. 13 - 19, 2022). Government ministers, chief nurses, NP students and NPs across all disciplines – practice, education, administration, research and policy – attended, presented and held influential discussions.
Co-chaired by RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun, NPIG chair Sally Baerg and chair-elect Shannon Clausen, this signature RNAO NP event, provided a forum for NPs to engage in an open dialogue with Ontario’s Chief Nursing Officer and Assistant Deputy Minister, Dr. Karima Velji and Ontario Health Chief Nurse and Executive Vice-President Quality Programs Judy Linton about the critical role of NPs in navigating the crisis in health care.
More than 200 participants from across Ontario from all sectors took part in sessions focused on the impact of NP practice, research and policy innovations. Primary care NPs spotlighted compelling evidence related to NPs as the pathway to increasing access to timely and quality care and demonstrated their contributions to health outcomes for vulnerable and underserved populations. Other sessions highlighted the amazing results of collaboration among advanced practice nurses, NPs and CNSs, and reinforced the contributions of NPs in long-term care (LTC).
Key themes resonating throughout the day included: leadership, collaboration, unleashing power, NPs as solutions, opportunities, practice models, and joint advocacy with RNAO. Following question and answer sessions with Health Minister and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones and LTC Minister Paul Calandra, participants left the event feeling proud of their role and growing impact to benefit the health of Ontarians.
