The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) is leaving a lasting impression with nurses around the world as one of its top nursing leaders is being inducted into the American Academy of Nursing this Saturday.

RNAO’s CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun will be one of five Canadians inducted into the 2018 class of Academy fellows during a ceremony at the academy’s annual policy conference in Washington, D.C. The academy is made up of 2,500 fellows who are world recognized nursing leaders in education, management, practice, research and policy; they serve the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy.

“This honour highlights Dr. Grinspun’s work and leadership in bringing RNAO to the forefront of influencing nursing, health and health-care policies and practices in Ontario, nationally and internationally. The association takes pride in Grinspun’s induction and we applaud her for being a driving force in making a difference for nurses and the public,” says RNAO president Dr. Angela Cooper Brathwaite. “On behalf of RNAO’s board of directors, staff and more than 42,000 members, we congratulate Doris on this most prestigious and well-deserved recognition.”

Grinspun has been the CEO of RNAO since April 1996 and is the founder of RNAO’s internationally renowned Best Practice Guidelines Program. She is also a widely recognized policy expert. Before beginning her tenure at RNAO, she served as director of nursing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. She holds a masters in nursing from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a PhD in sociology from York University.

“I am humbled to be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. I take this honour with a commitment to contribute my expertise to that of 2,500 nursing leaders who are strengthening health systems around the world. Together, we can do much to advance evidence-based practices and policies that optimize health outcomes for all,” says Grinspun.

RNAO is the professional association representing registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and nursing students in Ontario. Since 1925, RNAO has advocated for healthy public policy, promoted excellence in nursing practice, increased nurses’ contribution to shaping the healthcare system, and influenced decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve.
