About this event

The Handover: A Nurse’s Last Shift is an internationally recognized, best-selling book that captures the emotional, ethical and professional realities of nursing through powerful first-person stories. Co-authored by Tilda Shalof, a globally respected nurse educator, and endorsed by Canada’s Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Leigh Chapman, the book offers an authentic and deeply human portrayal of nurses’ experiences across practice settings.

This interactive Nursing Week session invites nurses, students, educators and leaders to explore how storytelling and reflection can support resilience, ethical decision-making and patient advocacy. Using short, compelling excerpts from the book, participants will be guided to reflect on their own practice experiences and consider how narrative can deepen empathy, compassion and professional growth.

Through facilitated discussions, attendees will explore lessons drawn from real nursing stories and share insights that help empower them in their clinical, educational or leadership roles. The session will also highlight practical strategies for integrating reflective practice into daily work, such as journaling, peer dialogue and post-shift debriefing.

Participants will leave inspired to apply the lessons from The Handover: A Nurse’s Last Shift to navigate ethical and emotional challenges, support colleagues and prioritize their own wellbeing – strengthening both personal resilience and professional nursing practice.
