About this event

Legal issues can arise in any area of nursing practice, and understanding the legal principles that govern professional liability can help registered nurses (RN) and nurse practitioners (NP) navigate clinical decision-making with greater confidence.

Join us for an RNAO legal education webinar exploring the legal liability of health professionals, with particular attention to issues relevant to RNs and NPs.

This session will provide an overview of the legal framework for professional liability, including what must be established for a successful negligence claim, with particular reference to medical malpractice matters. Drawing on recent case examples, experienced counsel will also discuss practical risk-management considerations that commonly arise in nursing practice.

Participants will gain a clearer understanding of:

  • the legal principles that apply when professional liability is alleged
  • key elements that must be proven in negligence and medical malpractice claims
  • the importance of clear and thorough documentation
  • when consultation and referrals may be critical to safe practice and risk management
  • what to do, and what to expect, if named in a legal proceeding

This session is ideal for RNs and NPs seeking a practical understanding of legal liability in professional practice, as well as general information and guidance on how to respond and what to expect if they are ever involved in a legal claim.
