Hands off Ontario's sexual-education curriculum

Over 2000 people have already told Premier Ford, Minister Thompson, & Minister Elliott to keep the 2015 sex-ed curriculum in place. Have you?

With five weeks before the new school year starts, the province of Ontario is changing, with no consultation, what will be taught in the sexual-education curriculum. Premier Ford announced that the modernized sexual-education curriculum which has been taught since 2015, will be thrown out and replaced with one that is from 1998. Using a 20 year-old curriculum designed before widely accessible internet will deprive students of the information and skills they need to keep themselves safe from sexual assault, abuse, and bullying.

It is irresponsible to revert to the 1998 sexual-education curriculum that does not address today's context and challenges. In 2018, it is critical that students learn in age-appropriate ways about consent, sexual orientation, gender identity, the dangers of cyber-bullying, online predators, and sexting. We must strengthen the mental and physical health of children by giving them the information and skills needed to help protect them and those around them from abuse, sexual assault, and all forms of bullying.

That's why the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) is calling on the provincial government to keep their hands off the modernized sexual-education curriculum that has been taught since 2015.
