Teamwork and creativity in dementia care at Bloomington Cove Care Community

Bloomington Cove Care Community, a rural long-term care home serving residents with dementia, has implemented innovative, person-centred approaches to improve care and quality of life. With the support of a Behavioural Support Ontario-funded RPN, daily huddles, risk management meetings, and external specialists, the home addresses responsive behaviours and complex care needs.

Their “BUILD” program—offering therapies such as music, pet, sensory, bright light, doll, and lavender aromatherapy—is tailored to resident preferences, reducing aggressive behaviours, resistance to care, antipsychotic use, and sleep disturbances.

Ongoing collaboration with external providers and an expanded behavioural support team strengthens Bloomington Cove’s commitment to evidence-based, person-centred dementia care.
