Fight cuts to public health funding

The provincial government is slashing $200 million from public health, cuts that will place the health of Ontarians at significant and unnecessary risk. Here’s the story:

The provincial government is moving quickly to cut funding as it revamps the structure of public health. For programs whose costs are jointly funded by Ontario and municipalities, the Ford government has pulled $200 million dollars in funding.

Frontline public health professionals prevent disease and promote health and well-being. They safeguard our water and food, reduce harm caused by substance use and prevent and control infectious and communicable disease. By improving health and reducing inequities, public health serves a vital role near the front end of an integrated health system. Investing in public health is critical and a cost-effective way to help end hallway health care.

RNAO urges Premier Ford and Health Minister Elliott to preserve funding for frontline public health as they collapse the number of public health entities to 10 so that Ontarians aren’t forced again to suffer tragic consequences like those brought on by SARS and Walkerton.
