Two-part best practice champions virtual workshop

By Connie Wood, RN B.ScN MN, LTC best practice co-ordinator

In response to pandemic protocols, RNAO switched gears in the spring of 2020 and began offering a two-part virtual best practice champion’s workshop. These online workshops will continue for the foreseeable future. Participants are introduced to best practice guidelines (BPG) and learn how to successfully implement them using the Knowledge-To-Action framework (KTA) outlined in RNAO’s Toolkit: Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines, Second Edition.

The champions workshop consists of a brief pre-recorded introductory webinar, followed by two live three-hour webinars. It is designed for nurses and other health-care providers. Virtual sessions are currently held once per month. The first and second session are offered each month, alternating mornings and afternoons so participants can choose the live session time that best suits their work schedule. Workshops can be done individually or as a group. To receive a best practice champion certificate, sessions must be completed in sequential order within two months of attending the first session. This unique approach is co-facilitated by experienced RNAO staff alongside nurses who bring a wide range of experience in supporting the implementation of BPGs.

RNAO will release a new edition of its Leading Change Toolkit during a national webinar on Oct. 5, with subsequent updates to the champion’s workshop curriculum. Topics will include the KTA framework, social movement action framework and an overview of tools available to aid in BPG implementation. The use of these two frameworks will push change faster because it engages both a systematic and 'bottom-up' approach to inform practices. Watch for future announcements and become the champion who leads change.  See article Coming soon – A new implementation resource from RNAO - The Leading Change Toolkit, Third Edition
