RN in a post-surgical unit, Unity Health, St. Michael’s Hospital

Lhamo Dolkar has always had a passion for health care. She worked as a homeopathic practitioner and educator in India before coming to Canada in 2009. When she arrived, she enrolled at Toronto’s Ryerson University to become an RN. She says it was good to go back to school because it allowed her to learn about the Canadian system and make life-long connections. Dolkar is currently studying in the Combined Masters and Primary Healthcare Nurse Practitioner Program at Ryerson University. “Learning is never a waste (of time), and knowledge is an investment,” she says. RNAO helped shape Dolkar into the nurse she is today through its leadership and positive and supportive environment, she adds. Dolkar has worked as a youth counselor in a group home setting with pregnant teen mothers and babies. She currently works at St. Michael’s Hospital as an RN in a post-surgical unit. She says she loves her job because she feels grateful to help people when they are vulnerable. Her experience working and living in rural areas of India has also helped her understand the importance of equitable access. Dolkar is looking forward to shadowing RNAO CEO Doris Grinspun, someone she says she admires deeply. It is “…just an extreme honour.”

The HUB Fellowship gives an RN or NP the opportunity to get in the thick of things with a one-week placement with RNAO CEO Doris Grinspun. The $2,000 HUB Fellowship is generously sponsored by RNAO’s Group Home and Auto Insurance provider, HUB International Ontario Limited.
