Nurses' Stories: Yu Xin (Steve) Xia

Entering university, I was fortunate to receive multiple scholarships. This financial support has enabled me to commit my time to the Western-Fanshawe Nursing Students' Association, where we focus on various social, advocacy, and professional initiatives. This year, we held our first nursing formal since the COVID-19 pandemic began in addition to our signature nursing panel in collaboration with RNAO. Every day is a constant application of communication, coordination, and collaboration. Supporting our student body with subsidized basic life support courses or wellness events during the stressful exam season is truly special, and I take great pride in hearing my peers' affirmations.

In my first-year nursing foundations class, I was interested in the leader and advocate roles of the College of Nurses of Ontario’s entry to practise competencies. We need a robust nursing voice at every level of government to deliver equitable and feasible health-care solutions. From the grassroots to high-level lobbying, these skills should be embedded and encouraged in nursing education.

I am a proud student of Western University's Arthur Labatt School of Nursing, president of the Western-Fanshawe Nursing Students' Association, member of the RNAO Middlesex-Elgin Chapter, and board member of RNAO’s Nursing Students of Ontario interest group. I am confident that my varying experiences before graduation serve as the foundation of a perpetual career in nursing.
