As a first-generation RN in the family, it has been a journey of self-reflection to exhibit my values and its impact towards excellent care. My journey began as a RN in complex continuing care where we support patients on chronic ventilators, patients receiving post-surgery rehab and patients living with advanced dementia. With this broad scope of practice, I value accountability in my role as the RN to maintain nursing competencies, to educate myself and others when new learning opportunities arise and to demonstrate qualities of a positive work culture. I value integrity to provide safe patient care regardless of whether someone is micromanaging my practice. I value compassion to care for these patients and their quality of life. Everyday we engage with our patients and families in the care routine as a team.
I find joy and fulfillment to support practice policies, research, staff engagement and retention, and lead education through best practices to all staff alongside other leaders in the organization.
I see joy in our ventilated patients when they are finally able to safely go outside on a sunny day with the support of our frontline staff. I see joy in our patients living with advanced dementia who dance with our staff, sing songs and enjoy our company as we support their daily routines. These core values helped me become a clinical resource leader (CRL) where I can now share my values with the incoming staff and create a greater impact of excellent practice towards the organization. As a CRL, I find joy and fulfillment to support practice policies, research, staff engagement and retention, and lead education through best practices to all staff alongside other leaders in the organization.
