Becoming a registered nurse in Canada seemed to be an unreachable goal for me. My career as an academic leader in the Philippines as a college of nursing dean taught me skills not only in educating thousands of nurses now working around the world but also leadership and administration skills. I indulged in the most challenging areas of the profession and involved myself perfecting my crafts. I honed my research skills and became part of international research forums. The success I had was admired by many who comprehend the arduous yet fulfilling field of nursing. Despite the successful career I enjoyed, I still envisioned goals to go beyond, I told myself – “I will become a registered nurse in Canada”, and now I am! Was it easy? No – the adversity of the journey caused me to think of giving up numerous times. Frustrations, tears, doubts, what ifs occupied my thoughts for almost three years.
Sharing my story is a shout out for international nurses skeptical about pursuing their profession here...My story will show them that impossible can be possible.
Sharing my story is a shout out for international nurses skeptical about pursuing their profession here for reasons such as lack of clinical experience; long years of being out of practice, work experience in the academic field, as well as areas other than hospitals. My story will show them that impossible can be possible. I am now specialized in oncology and hematology making a huge difference in the lives of patients.
