About this event:

Join us for the Mental Health and Substance Use Program (MHSU) at RNAO’s upcoming two-part webinar series on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Nov. 27, as we discuss the challenges and look forward to the potential of nursing psychotherapy.

The complexity of the healthcare system and care delivery from emerging healthcare demands associated with an aging population, and an inability to access to primary care have influenced the need for advanced education and expanded roles for nurses. The scope of practice and educational pre-licensure requirements for nurses has incrementally evolved and expanded (Merali & Bajnok, 2023).

In 2018, the College of Nurses of Ontario, responding to intense advocacy by RNAO, introduced regulations to authorize both RNs and RPNs to provide the controlled act of psychotherapy. These regulations were approved by government in Dec. 2019 (Merali & Bajnok, 2023).

This first webinar in the series will discuss the role of the RN Psychotherapist and current practices in Ontario, highlight current challenges faced by RN Psychotherapists in practice, and explore past, present and future of RN Psychotherapy advocacy work.

The second webinar will highlight the impacts of RN Psychotherapy, discuss the future potential of nurses in Nurse Psychotherapy, and celebrate the launch of the new text book, "The Nurses' Guide to Psychotherapy: A Reference Book for Nurses Providing Psychotherapy".
