About this event:

Registered nurses (RN) in Ontario now have an expanded scope of practice to prescribe medications independently. This welcome news, announced in Nov. 2023 by Health Minister Sylvia Jones, is something that RNAO has been calling for since 2012. RN prescribing will increase access to care, unlock delays in the health system, prevent unnecessary transfers to hospital, expedite treatment and save taxpayers’ dollars.

RNAO applauds the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) for quickly developing a new practice standard that outlines how RNs, approved to prescribe, can do so competently and safely. RNAO is collaborating with the CNO and schools of nursing to ensure the successful implementation of RN prescribing.

RNAO is now calling for RN prescribing to be integrated speedily into the BScN curricula so that the 5,000 RNs graduating each year help ease access to care.

Join us on Monday, Feb. 12 from 2 – 4 p.m. ET to learn more. Topics for discussion include:

  • why RN prescribing matters
  • the scope of RN prescribing, including list of medications, conditions and practice settings
  • the RN prescribing programmes currently available
  • enablers and barriers to RN prescribing
  • next steps

Dr. Doris Grinspun, RNAO’s CEO will host the event and moderate a discussion with distinguished guests. Speakers include:
