Mobilizing a future vision for nurse practitioners

By: Citlali Singh, program co-ordinator, LTC best practices program

Imagine a system in which nurse practitioners (NPs) are visible, fully utilized and enabled to expand their scope of practice.  RNAO continues to mobilize health-system transformation through practice excellence for NPs.

RNAO’s NP Institute took place virtually earlier this spring with more than 250 NPs and health leaders in attendance including members of RNAO’s NP interest group, president and chief executive officer of Ontario Health Matthew Anderson and Associate Chief Justice Frank N. Marrocco. Participants spent the day discussing how NPs are shaping the health system of the future, as well as next steps toward full implementation of the recommendations in the Vision for tomorrow report.

RNAO’s NP task force released its groundbreaking Vision for tomorrow report at the association's virtual Queen's Park Day in February 2021.  The report provides evidence that NPs are crucial to people’s health and outlines a future where NPs strengthen all sectors of the health system. The report is based on evidence from an extensive literature review, environmental scan and broad stakeholder consultation. The task force report includes a vision for enhanced health care for all, in particular vulnerable populations.  Maximizing and extending the role of NPs in Ontario’s health-care system is emphasized.

In an effort to continue supporting NPs working in long-term care (LTC) through COVID-19 and beyond, RNAO facilitates regularly scheduled webinars to discuss clinical, operational and policy-related issues in LTC.  Colleagues are able to exchange best practices, support one another, and receive regular updates through the leadership of NP LTC Council co-chairs Kaitlan Laviolette, MN NP-PHC, attending NP, and Amera Elnamera, NP-PHC, attending NP. All NPs working in LTC are invited to participate in these monthly webinars every third Thursday at noon, to contribute their knowledge and expertise. To learn more about the NP LTC Council webinars, please contact Ann-Marie Morris, nursing and health policy co-ordinator, at amorris@RNAO.ca. You do not need to be a member of RNAO to participate in these meetings.
