Impact of implementing the Falls BPG Order Sets at Tilbury Manor (UniversalCare)

By: Sara Ryan, RN, corporate director of clinical services, UniversalCare Canada Inc.

Tilbury Manor was very eager and dedicated to implementing the RNAO BPG Order Set to further enhance the implementation of the Preventing Falls and Reducing Injury from Falls best practice guideline. Our team set a goal of implementing this new practice change in hopes of further decreasing the total number of falls each month. The impact of this practice change resulted in a significant decrease in falls and many additional positive outcomes.

By using the falls prevention and management BPG Order Sets, registered staff enhanced their knowledge and skill, enabling them to more accurately assess residents for predisposing risk factors for falls and fall-related injuries, as well as complete a comprehensive post-fall assessment. The registered staff were more skilled in predicting residents with high falls risk and implementing resident-specific interventions to reduce their risk of falls. The BPG Order Sets that were embedded within our PointClickCare documentation system facilitated a simplified and streamlined approach to assessment, referrals and care planning. They included additional educational information to support the staff. By using the Falls BPG Order Sets to support the implementation of the Preventing Falls and Reducing Injury from Falls BPG, Tilbury Manor achieved a 43 per cent reduction in its falls rate as seen in Table 1.
