This best practice guideline is intended to provide direction to practicing nurses during daily practice in all care settings, both institutional and community.

This Best Practice Guideline focuses on nursing teams and processes that foster healthy work environments.

The focus for the development of this guideline was managing conflict among nursing and healthcare teams with the view that while some conflict is preventable, healthy conflict can also be beneficial. For the purpose of this document, conflict is defined as: a phenomenon occurring between interdependent parties as they experience negative emotional reactions to perceived disagreements and interference with the attainment of their goals (Barki & Hartwick, 2004).

The guideline highlights knowledge, competencies and behaviours that recognize, prevent and mitigate fatigue; educational requirements and strategies; policy changes at organizational and system levels needed to support and sustain practices that prevent and mitigate fatigue; implementation strategies and tools; evaluation criteria and tools; and future research opportunities.

This best practice guideline (BPG) Oral Health: Supporting Adults Who Require Assistance Second Edition replaces the RNAO BPG Oral Health: Nursing Assessment and Intervention, which was released in 2008.
