Take Your MPP to Work (TYMTW) started as a celebration of Nursing Week and has been an annual event since 2000. TYMTW was conceived as an opportunity for registered nurses (RN), nurse practitioners (NP), and nursing students to give on-the-job tours of their diverse workplaces to politicians.
For a second year in a row, our TYMTW visits will be held virtually. However, we have discovered that even virtual visits provide a window into the working world of nursing during the pandemic.
For nurses and our health system partners, TYMTW is an exciting and empowering opportunity to engage in the political process and help MPPs understand the issues they face. For participating health system partners, it is an opportunity to demonstrate nursing programs and services and the benefits of funding them.
Our focus this year is on the issue of nurse wellness. During the pandemic, nurses have been on the frontlines from the outset and it is having an impact on their wellbeing with consequences for the effective functioning of Ontario’s health system post-pandemic. That’s the story of the RNAO’s report based on our Work and Wellbeing Survey.
“The survey finds many nurses have reached or crossed that limit and are, post-pandemic, planning to depart the profession at significantly higher rates than usual. The magnitude of potential departures by retirement or by changes in career paths calls for an immediate response from health system employers and government.”
This year’s TYMTW has already begun. We launched, as we always do, during Nursing Week and were privileged to have the Premier, Ministers, opposition party leaders and critics and even federal party leaders participate. There is, still, lots more to be done!
