Sept. 30: RNAO marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on Sept. 30, is a time for individuals across Canada to reflect on the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples and to work towards reconciliation as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report

To mark the day, RNAO is hosting a staff education day to provide staff members with space in the day to take part in local Indigenous-held events in their communities, as well as take time for personal reflection. Elder Kevin Deer from Kahnawake Mohawk territory will provide a traditional opening and closing as well as share guidance and traditional teachings throughout the day. Amy Short, the mental health and addiction anti-human trafficking liaison at the Ontario Native Women’s Association, will also guide staff in reflection and mindfulness activities. RNAO will continue to work with its Indigenous partners to address the impact of systemic racism and discrimination on community health and wellness through its Indigenous-focused Best Practice Spotlight Organization program, and other important initiatives and advocacy efforts.
