RNAO’s ongoing media profile: Your June 2025 report

This month, RNAO’s CEO and past-president were featured in a media story about a private member’s bill related to the use of staffing agencies. On June 4, NDP MPP and Shadow Minister of Health France Gélinas reintroduced a bill that would limit the amount of spending on staffing agencies. RNAO Past-President Dr. Claudette Holloway spoke at the NDP’s media conference to support the need for staffing shortages to be address by adding more nurses into the publicly funded system, not private staffing agencies. “The rise of for-profit staffing agencies is bleeding Ontario’s health system dry – $9.2 billion over a decade, with costs nearly doubling while investment in permanent hospital staff has stagnated,” said RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun (The Sudbury Star, June 8). “This bill is a call for an urgent course correction. By capping agency use and reducing reliance on costly for-profit agencies, we can pursue the real solution to staffing shortages: retaining and recruiting permanent staff by improving working conditions, competitive compensation, safe workloads and supportive practice environments.”
