Marie’s music matters; Delirium, dementia and depression

A vibrant 93-year-old volunteer named Marie brings life and connection to a busy dementia care unit through her weekly piano sessions.

As alarms sound and staff move through their daily routines, Marie gathers residents in a quiet room and fills it with music played entirely from memory. Slowly, residents lift their heads, smile, hum, and even sing — some for the first time in a long while.

Her decades of playing for the home, inspired by her late husband, demonstrate the powerful impact of music on people living with dementia and highlight the importance of meaningful, person-centred activation in long-term care.
