RNAO endorses the global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

To protect the lives of current and future generations, RNAO has joined the World Health Organization and more than 200 other international health organizations in a global initiative to demand governments develop and implement a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase out fossil fuels globally.

The initiative includes a joint letter that outlines the many threats to human and planetary health caused by fossil fuels – air pollution, the climate crisis, diseases and more – and asks governments to lay out a legally binding global plan to end expansion of any new fossil fuel infrastructure and production, phase out existing production and use of fill fuels in a fair and equitable manner, and fast-track real solutions and ensure a just transition.

This past Earth Day (April 22), RNAO released in position statement on climate change, which included the following call to action for federal, provincial and municipal governments: phase out the fossil fuel industry to fit Canada's climate action plan by immediately eliminating fossil fuel subsidies and banning new major fossil fuel infrastructure in Canada such as pipelines. RNAO will continue to advocate for the elimination of fossil fuels locally and globally.

Please share RNAO’s tweet and use #FossilFuelTreaty and #FossilFuelHealth on social media to join the conversation.

Learn more about the treaty at fossilfueltreaty.org and by reading the media release. RNAO encourages everyone to join the initiative by signing the letter as an individual.
