My name is Garlen and I’m a registered nurse and team leader on a trauma unit in the Greater Toronto Area. My nursing journey endured some unprecedented events, including a pandemic and institutional strikes that affected my educational experience. I began my nursing career as a new graduate in the winter of 2021 and have fallen in love with trauma ever since. Joining the workforce in chaotic times has also sparked an interest in education and implementing quality nursing care.

In addition to taking care of some of the city’s most intense and high-risk populations, I have had the privilege of mentoring and precepting consolidation students. My interest in instilling confidence and implementing nursing competence in new graduates joining a workforce that has been severely impacted by a pandemic — as well as my passion for education — has sparked my interest in pursuing graduate degrees. In the near future, I plan to complete a master’s degree in nursing, with the hopes of teaching and educating a future generation of nurses. Currently, as a team leader, I provide mentorship and leadership to a team full of hardworking members. I act as a liaison between nursing staff and the interprofessional team and work with senior leadership to coordinate a cohesive floor. Finally, my mission is to ensure that our clients are met with the most empathic and quality care while ensuring staff are feeling good as well.
