Stamatina Romas is a dedicated nursing professional with more than 30 years of clinical experience in acute care, including respirology, oncology, nephrology, specialized cardiology/telemetry, emergency/trauma care and mental health. Since 2011, she has been a full-time clinical nursing instructor at Brock University, teaching students from years one to four in all the above-mentioned settings. She also supports clinical instruction in the master’s degree program. Stamatina has taught theory, lab and clinical courses at the college level and has enjoyed precepting and mentoring staff throughout her nursing career. She has also collaborated on research projects with esteemed professors, colleagues and lab instructors, as well as instructional videos used in the university’s mental health labs. Stamatina also serves as a part-time faculty advisor for the practical nursing program at George Brown College. She has a passion for nursing and sees herself in this role long term. She feels honoured and thrilled and very grateful to receive this special award.
The Leadership Award in Student Mentorship is awarded to the RN or NP who demonstrates outstanding practice as a nurse educator, mentor or preceptor in health care. This individual enhances the role of the RN and/or NP by encouraging critical thinking and evidence-informed practice, and initiates discussion about important nursing issues that encourage action and change. This individual is resourceful, adapting teaching to maximize learning opportunities that will contribute to student engagement and action.
