Nyechuor Deng is a student in the Western University/Fanshawe College collaborative BScN program in London. She works as a clinical extern at London Health Sciences Centre, supporting patients with daily needs and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team. As the first in her family to pursue post-secondary education, she says she experienced many barriers growing up. Those experiences shaped her perspective and drew her to nursing, which she sees as an avenue to change health care from within. Nyechuor created the Equity in Every Shade series, which focuses on assessing conditions across diverse skin tones using the Monk Skin Tone Scale. She has presented her work through RNAO to help increase awareness around equity in health-care education and clinical practice. She is a proud member of the Canadian Black Nurses Alliance. Her involvement has allowed her to help organize the Black Health Fair, mentor students, participate in health equity discussions, and contribute to research and advocacy initiatives focused on improving representation and care for underserved communities.
