    Like all Canadians, and people around the world, our hearts go out to the people of Japan who are dealing with unthinkable tragedy. We admire their courage and resilience even as the full extent of the disaster is still unknown.

    My name is Amarpreet Kaur Ahluwalia and I am delighted to be here this evening on behalf of Ontario’s nurses. I am a diabetes nurse educator and like other registered nurses across the province, I see every day why it is urgent from a health perspective to immediately increase social assistance by $100 per month as a first step toward income adequacy.

    RNAO Executive Director Doris Grinspun took part in a media conference
    on Tuesday March 31st to outline the association's concerns about
    TILMA-like agreements.
    The conference, organized by the Council of Canadians, tried to draw
    attention to the TILMA agreement (between B.C. and Alberta) and similar
    agreements in the works such as the one currently being negotiated by
    Ontario and Quebec. The agreements have implications for health, safety
    and labour standards.

    Let me begin by saying just how pleased and honoured I am to be here among such a large gathering of nurses from across the province. I am especially pleased to be speaking this afternoon about a subject very dear to my heart – and that is the link between illness, the social determinants of health and nursing practice.
