Nurses must be included in PTSD legislation

Ontario's RNs, NPs and nursing students are urging the provincial government to fix its mistake, and immediately add nurses to legislation that expedites access to treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Legislators unanimously passed Bill 163 recently, which gives Ontario's first responders a more direct path to treatment for PTSD. The bill is a major step toward eliminating barriers for suffering Ontarians, except for a glaring omission: the province's nurses.

Since 2000, RNAO has advocated for 70 per cent full-time employment among Ontario's nurses as a means to ensure continuity of care and continuity of caregiver for patients in the province.

As part of this push, RNAO led the 70 per cent Full-Time Employment for Nurses Survey, which targeted all employers of nurses in the hospital and long-term care sectors. The results are in, and they show we have come a long way toward achieving our goals.
