Urge Premier Wynne to update Ontario’s workplace laws: the health of the precariously employed depends on it

The growing prevalence of low-wage, precarious work and its negative effects on health and well-being are realities that RNs and NPs see when dealing with patients and clients in their practice. The Changing Workplaces Review, an independent examination of employment standards and labour relations legislation commissioned by the provincial government, represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to push for changes to the province’s workplace laws.

On May 23, 2017 the Ministry of Labour released the final report of the Changing Workplaces Review after two years of study and consultation. Many of the recommendations that RNAO and other civil society voices put forward to address the negative impact of precarious, low-wage work were accepted by the special advisors who wrote this report. Across the province, the advisors "heard that the combination of low income, lack of control over scheduling, lack of benefits such as pensions and health care, personal emergency leave or sick leave, all together or in various combinations, creates a great deal of uncertainty, anxiety, and stress which undermines the quality of life and the physical well-being of a wide swath of workers in our society." (Summary, p. 5).

The CBC and Toronto Star report that the Premier and her cabinet are considering two proposals that RNAO members have long called for, and most recently discussed with MPPs at the 2017 Queen’s Park Day. Unfortunately, these were not included in the report’s recommendations - increasing the minimum wage and legislating paid sick days.

We need to mobilize if we want people to have better working conditions. Let’s urge the province to accept the recommendations of the Changing Workplaces Review that improve the health and lives of working people, as well as raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour and implement paid sick days.
