Eliminate the three-month OHIP wait

According to figures from 2014, an estimated 500,000 residents of Ontario did not have OHIP coverage for the whole or part of that year.

Those who fall through our social safety net include: individuals in the three-month OHIP waiting period (such as newly landed immigrants, temporary foreign workers, and returning Canadians); people who lack immigration status; individuals awaiting responses to inland immigration sponsorship or compassionate applications; and those who are unable to prove their eligibility for OHIP.

Not having OHIP coverage often means that people delay seeking health care until they are very ill. When people do arrive at a hospital emergency department, uninsured Ontarians are more likely to have severe health conditions, more likely to die on arrival, and less likely to be admitted. Some hospitals ask for money upfront and many individuals are turned away when they are unable to pay. Those who are able to receive needed health care must then struggle to repay thousands of dollars in debt.

As a first step towards OHIP for all residents, please sign this action alert to urge the Premier and Minister Hoskins to eliminate the three-month waiting period for new immigrants, temporary foreign workers, and returning Canadian citizens.
