Supporting NPs in LTC

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant effect on all health-care sectors, however, long-term care (LTC) homes and their residents have been affected particularly hard.

Currently, there are 150 outbreaks in long-term care homes across Ontario and there are 1,855 active resident cases and 1,355 active staff cases related to COVID-19.

RNAO has been supporting LTC in a variety of ways, including the facilitation of the LTC Nurse Practitioner (NP) forum. The forum meets virtually twice a week and brings together NPs working in homes across the province, RNAO’s long-term care best practice coordinators, and RNAO’s nursing and health policy department. NPs have a platform to share their experiences supporting homes and residents and exchange resources.

The forum meets Monday and Thursday evenings.

On April 27, MaryAnne Weller, director of care at Stratford’s long-term care home Greenwood Court and NP Wendy Dunn presented at RNAO’s COVID-19 weekly webinar. They shared the protocol they undertook when the first resident tested positive for COVID-19 on March 31 and how they were able to control the spread.

To watch the webinar, please go online.

If you are an NP working in LTC and would like to share your experiences or hear from peers, please contact Kyle Dieleman, kdieleman@RNAO.ca.
