RNAO responds to Ontario budget

Ontario’s Finance Minister Charles Sousa unveiled the government’s budget on Wednesday, March 28.

RNAO home office staff was in the budget lock-up to examine the document and compare its offerings against our major policy asks.

New spending for mental health services, expanded OHIP+ coverage to remove costs barriers for seniors were among the high points.

Funding to hire additional RNs in long-term care, one for each of the province’s 627 nursing homes, was also announced.

The budget also contained a 4.6 per cent funding increase for the province’s hospitals. RNAO’s response said conditions to the new operating funding should be attached to ensure the money is used to hire more RNs.
