Nurses learn about working with First Nations

More than 100 nurses from across Ontario joined RNAO and Indigenous Services Canada in November to learn about evidence-based best practices.

As part of the Workshop for Nurses: Working with First Nations in Ontario, nurses who work with Indigenous communities in Ontario had the opportunity to learn about evidence-based best practices on topics such as cultural safety, trauma-informed care, and strength-based approaches to mental health, substance use and chronic disease management.

As a result, participants experienced a unique opportunity to learn from, and dialogue with, guest faculty and fellow nursing colleagues regarding evidence-based best practices, traditional practices, and their own clinical practices and community efforts.

Various Indigenous traditions were also incorporated throughout the workshop including the presence and counsel of spiritual leaders, daily smudging ceremonies, application of the Medicine Wheel, a sharing circle and sacred fire ceremony.

Overall, the event was a success and a holistic learning experience.
