RNAO is accepting applications from health-care organizations and academic institutions to act as a host site for either a Best Practice Champions workshop or Addressing Substance Use Champions workshop between May 2019 and January 2020.

Best Practice Champions Workshop

The Best Practice Guidelines Champions Level One (Orientation) Workshop is a one day in-person session designed to introduce nurses and other health-care professionals to the RNAO Toolkit: Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines, Second Edition. Through interactive activities, participants will further their understanding of evidence based practice, RNAO's Best Practice Guidelines, and effective strategies for guideline implementation in health-care settings including the evaluation of evidence, analysis of stakeholders, and keys to promoting sustained change in best practices.

Addressing Substance Use Champions Workshops

The Addressing Substance Use Best Practice Champions Foundational (Level 1) workshop provides participants with an overview of introductory concepts related to providing safe, ethical and competent care in all clinical settings to clients in who use substances.  This workshop will focus on the Engaging Clients Who Use Substances Best Practice Guideline  and will highlight foundational concepts related to understanding stigma, knowledge of licit and illicit substances, harm reduction and the social determinants of health.  Participants will gain a better understanding of best practices related to screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT).  Workshop participants will also be introduced to RNAO's Toolkit: Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines (2nd Edition), covering topics such as facilitating development and enhancement of skills, how to conduct a needs assessment and gap analysis, how to engage stakeholders, and how to assess organizational readiness for guideline and best practice implementation. This workshop is intended to build capacity among participants across all clinical settings who wish to gain knowledge and confidence when engaging with clients who use substances.

The Addressing Substance Use Best Practice Champions Advanced (Level 2) workshop expands on knowledge and content delivered in the Addressing Substance Use Foundational workshop and is directed to participants who have completed the level 1 workshop who wish to expand their knowledge of best practices related to substance use disorders.  This workshop will focus on the Engaging Clients Who Use Substances Best Practice Guideline and will highlight the guideline recommendations related to in-depth screening, comprehensive assessment and pharmacological and psychosocial interventions. Techniques, such as motivational interviewing (MI) will be reviewed and advanced concepts such as harm reduction and concurrent disorders will be discussed.  Exploration of sustaining implementation of best practices utilizing concepts related to leadership, mentorship and networking will be explored to enhance the Champion role.
