Make pharmacare universal

It is intolerable that one million Canadians must choose whether to take a needed medication or go without heat or food. That’s why it’s essential a federal advisory panel create equitable access to medication when it makes public its final report later in June.

Canadians are proud of health care they think of as universal, but our system denies many of us access to some critical care, and nowhere is that failure more glaring than the absence of national pharmacare. Simply put, we have fallen behind the rest of the developed world, and the Canadians who suffer most are those who are already among the most vulnerable.

Canada should immediately provide full coverage of medically necessary drugs through a single-payer system, without user fees or other out-of-pocket costs to Canadians.
