CNO updates on psychotherapy and RN prescribing

Representatives from RNAO attended the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Council meeting on Sept. 12-13 to hear updates on a number of issues for which RNAO and its interest groups have long advocated.

The ability for RNs to continue to independently initiate the controlled act of psychotherapy was one of the issues discussed. Prior to the meeting, RNAO called on CNO to allow RNs to continue to independently perform the controlled act of psychotherapy after the exemption period in January 2020. As a result of our advocacy, council provided direction to CNO staff to draft regulation that will enable nurses to independently initiate and perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. We anticipate that this will be in place after the exemption period ends in January 2020.

CNO also gave an update on progress toward RN prescribing. Draft regulation is expected to come to Council in December 2018. The first phase will see RN prescribing in specified medication categories (immunizations, contraception, smoking cessation, travel health, and wound care) as well as over-the-counter medications. RNAO will continue to push for fully independent RN prescribing inclusive of diagnostics.
