Sept. 30: RNAO marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on Sept. 30, is a time for individuals across Canada to reflect on the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples and to work towards reconciliation as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

Sept. 9: International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day
Each year on Sept. 9, RNAO recognizes International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day to promote and improve prevention, diagnosis, and support for people living with this disorder and their families. FASD is a lifelong disability that affects the brain and body of individuals who were exposed to alcohol in the womb.

Congratulations to RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun for being this year’s recipient of the University of Michigan School of Nursing’s (UMSN) Career Lifetime Achievement Award. UMSN’s Alumni Awards committee selected Grinspun for her commitment to advancing nursing, health, social policy and evidence-based practice.

Education event for RNAO’s region 5 members
On Sept. 20, RNAO helped to facilitate an education event exclusively for its members in region 5, which consists of the Grey-Bruce, Muskoka-Huronia-Parry Sound and South Simcoe chapters.
During the event, RNAO’s nurse practitioner policy analyst Dr. Brenda Stade provided an overview of the findings in the Nursing Through Crisis: A Comparative Perspective report.

#DecriminalizeNow campaign
The criminalization of simple drug possession in cities across Ontario is costing lives. That’s why RNAO is launching a new campaign called #DecriminalizeNow.
On Oct. 3, RNAO will send a letter to mayoral candidates in 21 municipalities asking them to sign a pledge to support decriminalizing simple drug possession in Canada ahead of the Oct. 24 municipal elections.

On Sept. 28, RNAO CEO Dr. Doris Grinspun, President Dr. Claudette Holloway, Immediate Past-President Morgan Hoffarth and several board members met with members of the provincial government at Queen’s Park in Toronto, including Premier Doug Ford, Health Minister Sylvia Jones and Chief Nursing Officer and Assistant Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Karima Velji.
RNAO endorses the global Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty
To protect the lives of current and future generations, RNAO has joined the World Health Organization and more than 200 other international health organizations in a global initiative to demand governments develop and implement a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase out fossil fuels globally.
