Annual General MeetingRNAO's Annual General Meeting takes nursing to new heights

More than 700 RNs, NPs and nursing students and guests from all over Ontario gathered at the Hilton Toronto earlier this month to celebrate 91 years of success and achievements in health care and nursing at RNAO's Annual General Meeting. Guests at the three-day event included notable figures such as Health Minister Eric Hoskins, Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown, Leader of Ontario's New Democratic Party Andrea Horwath, President of the International Council of Nurses Judith Shamian, and Provincial Chief Nursing Officer Kaiyan Fu.

Kawartha-Victoria ChapterKawartha-Victoria chapter discusses ethics of assisted dying

To hear what health-care professionals including nurses have to say about assisted death, the Kawartha-Victoria chapter became the latest RNAO chapter to organize a workshop on April 12 in Peterborough. With more than 100 nurses, nursing students and other health-care professionals in attendance, the half-day workshop, entitled Physician Assisted Death: What about the nurse?, examined the potential ethical impact of assisted dying on nursing roles and responsibilities.

In Ontario, 13,000 people die annually from tobacco-related causes, resulting in $1.6 billion dollars per year in direct health system costs. In addition, electronic cigarettes are potentially harmful to health and their quality and contents are unregulated in Canada. To strengthen healthy public policy in Ontario, RNAO submitted several recommendations in response to proposed legislative and regulatory changes under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 1994 and Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2015.
