Title: Effective Guideline Implementation Strategies in Community Health: A Knowledge Synthesis

Presenter: May Tao RN, MSN, BPSO Coordinator, Toronto Public Health

The rapid growth in nursing science in the past decades requires a systematic and innovative approach to translate the knowledge into practice. Clinical Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) have emerged that are promising tools to provide direction to health care organizations in translating evidence into practice. These tools cannot successfully make a difference in the clients’ health unless suitable strategies and processes are used in their implementation.

This presentation will explore strategies and processes used by health professionals in community health settings for guideline implementation. The Joanna Briggs Institute Model and the Knowledge-to-Action Framework were used to guide the process of this knowledge synthesis. The findings of the review, the implications to nursing practice, and recommendations will be shared.

During this presentation, participants will learn:

  • Describe the type of strategies used for guideline implementation in community health settings;
  • Understand how these strategies and process are applied; and
  • Identify ways to use these strategies and process in their own settings.
