President's Award in Clinical Practice: Andrea Zides

This award recognizes staff nurses who consistently demonstrate expertise and evidence-based practice in one or more areas of clinical practice. The winner demonstrates nursing leadership in her/his workplace, and influences change for the betterment of patients, families and/or communities.

For Andrea Zides, diabetes was always a challenging specialty in nursing. From learning body systems to memorizing diabetes medications, she didn't see herself working in the field. However, her whole life changed when she decided to dive in professionally, becoming a certified diabetes educator, and opening her own diabetes education centre in Welland, Ont., in 2010. At her centre, she provides OHIP-covered diabetes education and treatment, ensuring clients understand what they are taking and why. Andrea also takes time to mentor high school and nursing students, teaching them about business management, patient care and diabetes. "I think that leadership is a natural ability that some people are fortunate to have but that can also be learned after years of dedication to a profession," she says, adding that RNAO shapes many nurses by encouraging leadership, growth and tangible opportunities to explore continued learning. Andrea enjoys her work, and doesn't see herself changing her focus. However, she also says she is always up for a challenge.
