President’s Award for Leadership in Clinical Nursing Practice: Kimberly Jones

The RNAO President's Award for Leadership in Clinical Nursing Practice is awarded to the RN or NP who consistently demonstrates expertise and evidence-informed practice in one or more areas of clinical practice in a staff nurse position. This member enhances the role of nursing by demonstrating leadership in her/his workplace and influencing change for the betterment of patients, families and/or communities. The winner(s) of this award receive a $2,000 scholarship or the equivalent in funding towards attending a Canadian Nurses Association or International Council of Nurses conference. Funding for this award is generously sponsored by RNAO's group home and auto insurance provider, HUB International Ontario Limited. There are two recipients this year.

Kimberly Jones is usually the one nominating her co-workers for awards, so she was surprised to win one herself. A graduate from Mohawk College in 1995, Jones has worked in a variety of nursing specialties, including neurosurgery, cardiology, pediatric oncology and mental health. She currently provides outpatient therapy at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. She says her first job in neurosurgery was very rewarding and helped her develop her skills as an RN. In addition to front-line nursing, Jones works as a freelance medical writer, and has taught RPN and RN students at Mohawk College. She has enjoyed this work, but prefers interacting directly with patients. Although she's always open to working in different sectors, she really enjoys her current role in mental health. "To watch (patients) get their lives back and get out of that fog of depression is really rewarding," she says. Jones also earned a master's degree with a minor in mental health in 2013 from Charles Sturt University in Australia, and a graduate diploma from the clinical behavioural sciences program at McMaster University in 2017.
