About this BPSO:

Our University was founded in 1996 by the initiative of professors, researchers, banks, private companies, and the local government. Its first undergraduate program was initiated in 1996 in the field of Business Management. Since then Atlântica has enlarged its teaching and research areas and today it is a reference in the fields of Management, Health Sciences, Informatics and Engineering. A Higher School of Health Sciences (Escola Superior de Saúde) was established in 2001 and more recently (2015) it was created the School of Industry and Business.

The undergraduate Nursing Program operates since 2001 under the department of health sciences. It is a four-year degree with a strong practical component. Students are allowed to train both academic and practice skills, spending almost half of the course in a range of care settings (primary care, acute care, homecare, integrated care).

The Nursing Department has four main areas of research: Education, Mental Health; Rehabilitation; Nursing Sciences and Health Care Management and Quality. These areas are established according to our academic body specialty, and the ongoing projects are developed with regional partnerships to address local needs.

In order to promote training and scientific cooperation in the area of health sciences between Higher Education Institutions and Research Centers, we are also among the first academic institutions to integrate the Academic Network of Health Sciences of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (RACS-CPLP).
