The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) is seeking a full-time UX/Web Developer who will thrive as part of the innovative and supportive Information Management and Technology team (IM&T). The successful candidate will lead, plan, design and develop research-informed, engaging web user experiences, applications and interfaces. They will flourish in a collaborative environment often working with teams comprised of content editors, designers, developers, and project owners.

The successful candidate will develop great web user experiences, including data informed interactions. To that effect, the successful candidate will have strong technical skills combined with the ability to be creative and compassionate. They will possess excellent communication habits in order to work well with team members from multiple departments and external partners. Equally important is that this individual will aspire to embody RNAO’s core goals.

This is a Level 8 position under a Collective Agreement with the Canadian Office & Professional Employees Union, Local 343, with an annual starting salary of $71,215 with annual increments reaching $93,146 after four years, plus a full benefits package including a defined benefit pension plan.

  • Lead initial phases of web projects to help identify the best user experience for our end users and prepare the project planning documents
  • Prepare and facilitate information gathering workshops with internal and external stakeholders
  • Analyze research and make recommendations on information architecture and interactive design
  • Create interactive site maps, wireframes, prototypes
  • Communicate mock ups, interaction models, end-to-end experiences for target audiences and other members of the project team
  • Develop user personas and user journeys based on research, and defined user tasks and business goals
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and visual designers to implement attractive usable designs
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the RNAO web development process
  • Design and develop user friendly dashboards to display relevant information based on data from analytics and RNAO databases
  • Use data from analytics and RNAO databases to guide the user experience creation
  • Write and debug front-end code for Drupal (including but not limited to):
    • HTML, CSS, Sass, Twig, JavaScript
    • Theme template files, pre-process functions, theme hooks
    • Vanilla JavaScript, JQuery, Drupal Behaviors
  • Execute Drupal site-building tasks (including but not limited to):
    • Enabling and configuring modules
    • Selecting settings, configurations, views, menus, view modes
  • Work effectively with individuals, teams and departments and support the total web design and development process
  • Work with local development environments and command line tools
  • Attend scheduled meetings with project teams to provide guidance and updates
  • Lead, plan, and execute development tasks
  • Provide guidance and documentation to improve front-end expertise of co-workers and content editors
  • Set priorities and expectations, and communicate project needs and task progress
  • Troubleshoot & answer support issues and escalate issues requiring management attention in a timely manner
  • Champion the use of open-source software to meet RNAO’s needs while promoting digital equity and social justice


  • University degree or college diploma in computer science or related area or combination of education, experience and/or training and up to five years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in UX design and development
  • Knowledge of user experience disciplines such as UX research methods, information architecture, usability testing and content strategies
  • Extensive understanding of mobile and web platforms
  • A highly organized workshop facilitator who knows how to prepare, analyze, and run a workshop with external and internal stakeholders
  • Understands how to use data analytics to inform web design, development and content requirements
  • Creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of interactive design.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to present concepts, ideas, and insights to the project team
  • Understanding of Drupal module ecosystem, including experience with Drupal 8 and 9
  • Experience with Drupal theming including UI familiarity, configuration, basic site administration, creation/manipulation of template files, pre-processing and writing/overriding theme functions
  • Proficiency in core technologies for front-end development (CSS, Sass, HTML, Javascript)
  • Experience with Linux
  • Experience with Git or other revision control tools for version control in a group setting
  • Knowledge and adherence to Drupal coding and security standards
  • Familiarity with terminal development tools like Drush, npm, Composer
  • Working knowledge in implementing responsive designs of web/mobile/social, and information architecture.
  • Knowledge of W3C compliance, AODA and cross browser & device compatibility is preferred
  • Enthusiastic about using and promoting open-source software alternatives


  • Familiarity with CiviCRM.
  • DevOps knowledge.
  • Familiarity with accessibility best-practices.
  • An active member of an open-source web community.


  • Two or more years experience with information architecture, user research and strategy, wireframing and prototyping or equivalent relevant experience required.
  • Must have a reliable internet connection and a willingness to work from home until we return to the office
