A boy named Mikey - a gender story in six chapters
Ottawa Citizen

Much like many other health-related stories, A boy named Mikey - a gender story in six chapters was an important but complex one to tell, says writer Matthew Pearson. His winning feature tackles a transgender teen's transition, exploring gender identity, and how practitioners, including health-care providers at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, are helping these youth to navigate what can be a difficult and emotionally charged time. Matthew hopes his article is an example of what top-notch health reporting should be: accurate, effective, insightful, and rich with human experience. Since completing his Master of Journalism at Carleton University, he has worked for CBC, the Victoria Times Colonist, and the Ottawa Citizen, where he currently covers city hall.
