The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario continues to develop evidence-based practice guidelines to support nurses and other health-care providers in improving the care and lives of seniors.
In the Long-Term Care Best Practices Initiative, opportunities are offered to long-term care homes to participate in guideline implementation and to find ways to reach a new level of excellence in resident care.
The United Nations officially recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15th each year.
“The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) was founded in 1997 and is dedicated to global dissemination of information as part of its commitment to worldwide prevention of elder abuse.” The United Nations International Plan of Action adopted by all countries in Madrid, April 2002, clearly recognizes the importance of elder abuse and puts it in the framework of universal human rights. The first WEAAD was held on June 15th, 2006.

RNAO is in the process of developing a best practice guideline on elder abuse . It is focused on recognizing, managing and preventing the abuse and neglect of older adults throughout various health care institutions and community settings in Canada.
