November 22, 2008
On November 19, 2008, the Seventh Invitational Elder Health Think Tank, “Aging at Home: Getting There from Here” took place in Toronto. One immediate outcome of the meeting was to ensure that the Premier and that the Members of the Executive Council of Ontario support the principles, strategies and recommendations of the 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction.
The health and well-being of Ontarians is compromised by poverty. A growing number of Ontarians don’t have what they need to live in health and dignity, including approximately 57,000 seniors living in poverty. These challenging economic times are exactly the time when bold leadership is needed to stimulate the economy by investing in poverty reduction. Building affordable housing, upgrading existing social housing, and ensuring livable incomes will have both short and long-term benefits.
What the Elder Health Coalition has done
On November 21, 2008 the Co Chair’s of the Elder Health Coalition, Gerda Kaegi (Past President, Canadian Pensioners Concerned) and Doris Grinspun (RNAO Executive Director), sent a letter to the Honourable Dalton McGuinty and to the Members of the Executive Council of Ontario communicating the collective voice of the Elder Health Think Tank delegates to support the principles and strategies of the 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction and to adopt its recommendations.
