Urgent Action Alert to Premier McGuinty: Don’t Slow Down - Act NOW on Practical Strategy to End Tobacco Use
November 5, 2010
Earlier this week, the RNAO wrote to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty urging the government not to shelve the practical recommendations of its Tobacco Strategy Advisory Group (TSAG). Representing nurses on this important government-appointed panel, the RNAO took its role seriously to suggest achievable outcomes that the government can implement over the next five years to reduce tobacco use.
Specific recommendations include licensing tobacco retailers, guidelines for cigarette packaging, prohibiting smoking in entrances to public buildings and playgrounds, and allowing landlords to include non-smoking language in leases. All of these and more are doable and in fact crucial if we are to reduce the tragedy of 13,000 Ontarians who die from tobacco-related illnesses every year.

Nurses know more than anyone the unacceptably high costs of tobacco use. Nurses appreciate that much has been done, yet there is much more to do. Nurses are in the best position to tell the Premier: “Don’t slow down. Show leadership by implementing a practical strategy to end tobacco use”.
Whether you are a RN or RPN, student, family member or friend of a nurse, please write TODAY to the Premier. He needs to hear the voice of nursing – loud and clear. Action to end tobacco use saves lives. It’s the right thing to do.
